A detailed exploration of the multiple knowledges that converge, coalesce and contribute to the display and evaluation of the Islamic artworks at the major 19th and 20th century exhibitions, World’s fairs, and recent museum exhibits. Emphasis will be on Western ‘orientalism’, as well as Eastern ‘self-orientalism,’ but we will also discuss alternating voices challenging the problematic dichotomy between the ‘Islamic East’ and the ‘West’.
