This course takes an expanded view of the moment of Abstract Expressionism’s post-World War II emergence, exploring its towering figures (e.g. Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko) in relation to rival practices in America and abroad (e.g. Robert Rauschenberg, French lyrical abstraction) and developments in other media (e.g. film, sculpture, dance) across shifting social and political contexts. We will also track Abstract Expressionism’s vast, varied, and often vexed legacies in the second half of the twentieth century. Enrollment Limit: 30 Instructor: K.
