This course on film sound will pay attention to the ways in which films across different cinematic traditions have articulated, produced, embodied, and instrumentalized the human voice. We will pay particular attention to the status of the voice as expressed through technologies of representation, the voice as ideological construct and tool, the voice as a means of articulating gender in the cinema, and the complex relationship between voice and filmic narration.
