This course will examine how popular culture such as fashion, television, film, art, music, theater, and the Internet has shaped perceptions of Asia and people of Asian descent in American history. Topics include: Asian immigration and early stereotypes; white actors in “yellowface”; representations of Asian American sexualities; the relationship between Asian Americans and African Americans; hate crimes and anti-Asian violence; community activism; the Vietnam War; and the relationship between the U.S., Asia, and the Pacific.
