The early modern period in Spain is one marked by the construction of political borders, geographical boundaries, social identities and linguistic and cultural norms. However there is also a strong countercurrent of transgression, rule-breaking and even rebellion. This course will explore the ways in which literature worked against the grain in early modern Spain through readings of medieval epic and lyric poetry, the crónicas of discovery, and Golden Age drama, poetry and narrative.
