JAZZ 380 - Special Topic: Introduction to Jazz Archives and Research Next Offered: Fall 2014, Fall 2016… Semester Offered: First Semester (Alternate Years) Half Course Credits: 2 Credits Attribute: CNDP, DDHU
This course – a combination of lectures, discussions, and student presentations – will serve as an introduction to the methods and current state of jazz research through engagement with jazz-related archival collections in the Conservatory Library, including the Neumann Jazz Collection and the Hinton Papers. Topics will include: an overview of the holdings of prominent jazz archives from across the U.S., jazz and photography, legal and technical issues in audio preservation, the role of recordings in documenting and enabling jazz history, the role of periodicals in jazz historiography, the sociology of record collectors, and the future of jazz archives.
