MHST 338 - History of The Broadway Musical Next Offered: Fall 2014 Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Attribute: CNDP/DDHU
What, exactly, is the Broadway musical? In what ways might it be different from opera and other forms of musical theater? This seminar will explore these questions through the stage works of representative Broadway composers (which may include Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rogers, Kurt Weill, and others.) Although much of their repertoire now tends to be performed in recitals, cabarets, and other venues as individual songs, our investigations will use primary sources from the New York Public Library to situate this material in its original theatrical and social contexts. Enrollment Limit: 15 Instructor: J. O’Leary Consent of the Instructor Required: Yes Prerequisites & Notes One MHST course at the 200-level, Music Theory III or Permission of the Instructor. (This course should not affect requirements of other departments.)
