This seminar focuses on music from c. 1500 to c. 1700 with particular attention to the intertwining of musical style, social function, and monarchial agenda. The repertory under consideration will include the music of the Eton Choirbook, early Tudor songbooks, liturgical works of Tallis and Byrd, Jacobean masque, and sacred, instrumental, and dramatic works by Henry Purcell. An introduction to primary sources will also inform class discourse. Enrollment Limit: 10 Instructor: S.
