Human beings, as Alfred Crosby reminds us, are “before anything else, biological and political entities.” This course examines British imperialism and colonialism as inseparable from the history of global environmental change from the early seventeenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. We explore among other topics, diseases, invasive species, commodity frontiers, and the conservationism manifested in British expansionism and the deleterious effects of British wars of conquest to non-European traditional economies, ecologies, and social life.
