Making use of the Oberlin library’s extensive jazz and blues catalog, this multi-genre course examines a diverse range of American writers and the musicians and performances that have influenced them. We will explore in particular the cultural values that writers invest in blues and jazz as well as iconic artists, such as Billie Holiday and John Coltrane. We will also forge connections between these representations and sociopolitical and aesthetic movements across the twentieth century. American, Diversity, Post-1900. Field Trips are required.
