This course examines representations of American myths, especially about the American dream, through the lens of the “national pastime”: baseball. Drawing on Barthes’s classic text Mythologies, we will consider the ways in which Malamud’s The Natural, Wilson’s Fences, Holiday’s Negro League Baseball, and the film 42, among others reinforce or subvert dominant cultural myths through their representations of baseball. While this course explores baseball narratives, no prior knowledge of or interest in sports is required. American, Diversity, Post-1900. Field trips are required. Enrollment Limit: 30 Instructor: E.
