In this course, we will explore African American poets’ strategies to unify what Benedict Anderson terms “imagined communities” by subverting Anglo America formally, linguistically, and sociopolitically. We will spend considerable time on the Harlem/New Negro Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement and conclude the course by examining poetic performances of cultural nationalism in the contemporary era. Alongside our primary texts, we will consider theories of orality and textuality, nationalism, race, gender, and postcolonialism. American, Diversity, Post-1900. Enrollment Limit: 25 Instructor: E.
