This course presents cultural and literary responses to Central America’s neocolonial status since 1898, including the CIA-sponsored Guatemalan coup in 1954, the Nicaraguan Sandinista Movement in the 1980s, guerrilla war in El Salvador and Guatemala, post-war indigenous struggles, and the narco wars. Readings will include Asturias, Cardenal, Cortázar, Belli, Castellanos Moya, and Rigoberta Menchu and the controversy around the genre of the testimonio. Taught in Spanish.
