This course examines the history of Western and Japanese imperialism in East Asia beginning with the Opium Wars in the mid nineteenth century and ending with decolonization in the wake of WWII. We will consider how empire shaped intellectual, political, economic, and cultural developments from a transnational perspective, paying special attention to the formation of ideologies of control and resistance.
