HIST 223 - Introduction to Modern Yiddish Culture: Between Religion and Secularism Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4HU
Since the early Middle Ages Yiddish had been intimately interwoven into Jewish life and closely involved in the evolution of Jewish religious practices, customs and folkways. Yet the emergence of modern Yiddish culture was highly contested, and the students will discuss the vicissitudes of modern Jewish identity and internal debates about the future of the Jewish people. The course contents include readings (in English translation) of modern Yiddish literature, thought, theater and cinema. Enrollment Limit: 35 Instructor: G.
