Almost overnight, it seemed, Japan went from an aggressive empire bent on regional hegemony to a pacifist nation united behind economic development. The Asia-Pacific War (1937-1945) continues to play an important role in Japanese society, culture, and politics. This seminar engages the historiography of memory studies, Japan’s domestic “memory wars,” and the role of historical memory in contemporary Japanese international relations and in popular and mass culture.
