This course explores various styles of American popular music of the last two hundred years, such as sentimental song, theatrical music, music of the Civil War, the blues, Tin Pan Alley, country, soul, rock, folk revival, disco, punk, hip hop, EDM, and indi rock. Along the way students will explore the gamut of approaches to the study of popular music, including musical analysis, close reading sociological critique, material culture, and identity studies.
