How did political thought in Europe from its emergence in ancient Greece until the 18th century, the era of ‘Enlightenment?’ Does it still matter today? We will pay particular attention to virtue, politics and human nature, property, rights, the foundations of political order and the goals of political life. Authors to be studied include: Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes and Locke, concluding with an introduction to Rousseau.
