GREK 314 - Images of Helen in Ancient Greece Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4HU, CD, WADV
We will study a variety of archaic and classical Greek texts that describe, invoke, and narrate the story of Helen, the paradigm of female beauty in the ancient Greek world. Of particular interest will be the ways that Classical authors manipulate the image of Helen (as depicted in the Iliad and Odyssey) to create new rhetorical, political, and cultural meanings. Texts read will include Euripides’ Helen, Gorgias’ Encomium, and selections from Homer and Hesiod. Instructor: K. Ormand Prerequisites & Notes Greek 202 or the equivalent
