This course considers a tangled and bloody colonial encounter from the French conquest to Algerian independence. It focuses on how various political traditions in France confronted racial difference in a colony that, legally, was not a colony at all, because it was annexed to the metropole. The course will involve a workshop in which students will serve as commentators on visiting scholars presenting work in progress. Other presentations and short papers required.
