In recent years, Middle Eastern states and societies have faced conflicts between official military institutions and militias derived by nationalist or Jihadist ideologies. This course investigates the social and economic history of the formation of modern armies within the post-colonial nation-states in the region and the impact of wars they fought on their societies. It also investigates the socio-economic roots and ramifications of the rise of militias and jihadists before and after the Arab Spring. Enrollment Limit: 16 Instructor: Z.
