ARTS 449 - Matisse’s Modernism Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4 HU
New course added 08.05.15.
Although Henri Matisse was one of the twentieth century’s most iconic artists, he remains an art-historical enigma; there is surprisingly little agreement as to how his work should be interpreted, and what, ultimately, its contribution to modernism amounted to. In this class, we will examine Matisse’s work in relation to the critical texts-including the artist’s own writings-that have circumscribed it, confronting issues fundamental to twentieth-century art, including gender, race, and the legacy of French colonialism.
