Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Early Modern Spain and the Spanish Americas increased the regulatory measures that defined women’s behavior regarding virtue and deviance. This course examines these changes and the way they determined how women negotiated, manipulated and circumvented mechanisms of control. Readings include Teresa de Jesús, María De Zayas, Catalina de Erauso and Sor Juana; as well as inquisitorial records, normative manuals, and the analysis of visual texts. Taught in Spanish.
