ANTH 293 - Latin American Ethnography from the “Borderlands” Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4 SS, CD
New course added 10.30.15.
This course will examine Latin American ethnography and social history through the analytic lens of the borderlands. We will explore the changing ways scholars have theorized the concept of borderlands as ideological and socio-political spaces of encounter and intercultural exchange, as well how boundaries are continually erected to prevent such crossings. We will draw on ethnographic case studies, including art as activism on the U.S. Mexico-Border, urban relations and boundary making in Caracas, and the creation of internal borderlands in Colombia.
