This course examines African American Literature from 1937 to the present. Beginning with the literature of social realism (Ann Petry and Richard Wright) we will cover almost 100 years of African American Literature, including some of the major critical discourses (Modernism, Protest, and the Black Arts Movement) that have guided its development over the past century. Other authors discussed include Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones, and Toni Cade Bambara. Enrollment Limit: 35 Instructor: M. Gadsby Consent of the Instructor Required: Yes
