HIST 163 - Modern South Asia Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4SS,CD
This is a survey level course introducing students to the making of modern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh from the onset of British colonial rule in 1757 to the present. We will study empire and nation state not as a set of institutions but as a changing set of social interactions amongst people from different walks of life, hailing from South Asia, Britain and other parts of Asia. Such social practices included racism, communal warfare, casteism, anti-colonial struggles, trade unionism, women’s movements and anti-caste movements. Enrollment Limit: 30 Instructor: T. Chakraborty
