ANTH 321 - Language and the Body Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4SS,CD, WADV
This course introduces students to anthropological perspectives on embodied communication, including cross-cultural studies of speech, gesture, and sign languages in human societies, as well as natural and experimental studies of non-human animal communication. Throughout the course we will question the Cartesian division between mind and body that has informed many discipline’s conceptions of language, while raising questions about the nature of language and personhood.
