In contrast to popular and scholarly claims that literacy is a monolithic phenomenon with predictable effects across contexts, this class argues that literacies are multiple and must be understood in the socio-cultural contexts in which they are used. We examine the ways in which literacies are linked to social relationships, technologies, talk, and actions as we explore textual practices drawn from many different geographical, cultural, and historical settings.
