ARTS 434 - Cinema Artist’s Cinema Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4HU
This seminar traces the genealogy of the moving image in 20th and 21st century artistic practice. Working across art history, cinema studies, and media theory, we will explore the emergence of the moving image between the black box and white cube. We will consider debates around the recent catch-all designation “artists’ moving image,” and engage with both theoretical and socio-political concerns arising from expanded cinema performance, structural film, screen-reliant media, video installation, etc. Artists include Oskar Fischinger, Andy Warhol, Paul Sharits, Tony Conrad, Tacita Dean, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Fiona Tan, Christian Marclay, Anri Sala, and Kevin Jerome Everson. Outside screenings required. Prerequisites: 100-level course in art history.
