Japan has one of world’s oldest, most vibrant and most influential performance traditions. This course explores Japanese performing arts in their historical and cultural contexts. We focus on noh, kabuki and bunraku as the most widely staged traditional Japanese performing art forms, as well as film adaptations of kabuki & Shakespeare and avant garde but?. Themes informing our study include composition and content of plays; the emergence and development of popular theatre; conventions of performance; stage space & material culture; identity and role of the audience; gender issues in Japan?s performing arts.
