FYSP 188 - Documentary Now Semester Offered: Fall Semester 2019 Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4HU, WINT
The practice of documentary has grown exponentially since the emergence of digital cameras. We can now choose from thousands of documentary films on Netflix or scroll through our friends’ Instagram stories. Where does the impulse to bear photographic witness come from? How have technological developments shaped the way everyday life is recorded and understood? And what ethical concerns arise when making art from the experiences of others? This seminar will investigate these questions by studying a number of significant documentary films alongside canonical essays and reflections. Local field trip is required.
