FYSP 190 - Between Tradition and Modernity: Modern Chinese-language Fiction Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 Credits Attribute: 4HU, CD, WINT
What is modernity understood in a different culture? How do we read various expressions of modernity in Chinese literature? In this course, we will explore modern Chinese-language fiction since the early twentieth century and investigate how the idea of modernity is associated with different concepts: colonialism, nationalism, gender, class, and cultural practices. We will discuss how the clashes or mutual influences between traedition and modernity give rise to literary movements and cultural trends. We will also investigate how literary works produced in modern China and Taiwan articulate doubts, anxiety, dilemmas, criticisms, as well as desires and complicity regarding modernity and the West.
