ENGL 231 - Sports Literature and Cultural Fantasy Semester Offered: Second Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4HU, CD, WINT
We will study how sports appears in fictional, non-fictional, and poetic literary texts from around the world. In addition to exploring the various functions served by sports within different literary forms, we will examine how sports literature functions within broader social and cultural contexts. What fantasies of individual and collective identity does sports literature feed, or reveal? How does the specificity of sports, as portrayed in literary texts, shape the ways we experience and think about bodies, the differences we perceive between them, and the social categories and power structures associated with those differences? Prerequisite: Students should have completed a Writing Intensive course or gained Writing Certification in any course in the humanities. Requirements can be waived with instructor consent.
