ARTS 390 - Bell Labs to Blockchain: Art & Technology, 1925-Present Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4HU
This course considers the paradigm of ‘Art & Technology’ as an artistic, institutional, and social phenomenon across the 20th and 21st centuries. We will critically study the collaborations of artists and engineers in modern and contemporary art, including experiments with broadcasting, cybernetics, electronics, computational aesthetics, the internet, and contemporary uses of algorithms, machine learning/artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and blockchain. In addition to close formal analysis and interpretation, we will examine social and political impact by asking: What are the institutional circumstances in which artists and engineers collaborate, and how does this activity intersect with, or create, global networks of power? Field trips are required.
