ARTS 376 - Architecture, Trade, and Power in Early Modern Islamic Empires

Semester Offered: Second Semester
Full Course
Credits: 4 credits
Attribute: 4HU, CD

During the early modern period, ca. 1500-1800, one-third of the earth’s human population lived in lands ruled by three empires: the Ottomans in the eastern Mediterranean, the Safavids in the Iranian plateau, and the Mughals in South Asia. This period saw a surge in production of architectural monuments (such as the Taj Mahal), foundation of new cities, and expansion of public life in gardens, urban spaces, and coffeehouses. This course examines works of architecture and art produced in these empires in the context of global trade, representations of power, and social life in capital cities of Istanbul, Isfahan, and Delhi.
