AAST 410 - Debates in African History

Semester Offered: First Semester
Full Course
Credits: 4 credits
Attribute: 4SS, CD

This course deals with issues in African historiography. The course introduces students to major themes of debate over the entire sweep of African history. We will begin with a discussion of the historiography of pre-colonial and colonial Africa, then take a panoramic view of scholarly debates in the historiography of Africa. The discussions will involve, but not be limited to, debates about state formation, trades, wars, precolonial and colonial economies and societies, African resistance to colonialism, dynamics of the colonial state, decolonization, independence, and issues in the historiography of independent Africa. All regions of Africa to the north and south of the Sahara will be covered, but owing to the concentration of historical literature, many of our case studies will come from Western and Southern Africa.

Enrollment Limit: 15
Instructor: E. Dinka

Cross List Information: This course is cross listed with HIST 410.
