ARTS 319 - Cultural Heritage at Risk in Libya: a Working Archaeologist’s Perspective Semester Offered: First Semester Full Course Credits: 4 credits Attribute: 4HUCD
The North African country of Libya contains impressive cultural heritage from the prehistoric, Graeco-Roman, and Islamic periods. Today this heritage is being threatened, looted, and destroyed due to continuing civil disorder. This course will not only provide an introduction to the heritage of Libya but also discuss the types of threats this heritage is currently facing and how archaeologists in Libya are working with international organizations to identify, monitor, and mitigate the damage and looting of this heritage. Efforts to raise awareness of the importance of this cultural heritage among the local population will also be discussed.
