ENGL 227 - Jane Austen and Company: Romantic RevolutionsFC ARHU WINT 4 credits This course focuses on Romantics’ responses to the most pressing issues of their day: the French Revolution, massive social and gender inequality, the abolition of the slave trade, the industrial revolution and its ecological disasters, to name a few. Such engagements allowed Romantic authors to explore their own anxieties of authorship as they strove to gauge the rewards and perils of full participation in the “Republic of Letters.” As we ponder these and similar issues, we will pay close attention to the formal and generic attributes of a broad range of literary texts, from poetry to fiction to critical prose. British, 1700-1900. Pre-1800. Prerequisites & Notes: For complete prerequisites, please refer to the English Program section titled “200-Level Courses.”
