DANC 275 - Dance and ActivismFC ARHU CD WINT 4 credits Constructing a history of the political presence and uses of dance across a diverse geography, the course covers a wide range of movement practices, while drawing connections between dance and activist movements across these contexts. Readings highlight the entanglements of dance, dancer, and choreography in the formation of political identities and discourses, as well as the uses of dance in resisting oppression. Case studies examples include Chile, Argentina, Turkey, Syria, Cambodia, Cuba, and the United States among others. Themes include dance in response to incarceration, political oppression, HIV/AIDS, colonization, genocide, economic distress, and the #blacklivesmatter movement.
