HIST 141 - The History of Women in the U.S. to 1865FC SSCI 4 credits The History of Women in the U.S. to 1865 is designed to introduce students to the experiences of women across ethnicity, race, and class from the pre-colonial era to the American Civil War. Through a survey of historical scholarship, as well as primary documents and objects, students will be positioned to contextualize the development of ideas about gender. Students will examine the role of gender in American law, sexuality, aesthetics, ideas about womanhood, the private lives of individual women as well as the coalitions that took shape in womens organizing to critically evaluate how women shaped US history.
