GERM 410 - Legacies of East German Literature and Film

Writers and filmmakers were engaged in shaping the other Germany even before the formal establishment of the German Democratic Republic in 1949. Today they reflect upon a country that, in political terms, no longer exists. Examining representative works from 1946 until the present, we will explore the development of literary and film culture in East Germany and assess its influence since the opening of Cold War borders. This course will pay special attention to the many East German authors who visited Oberlin College as Writer-in-Residence. Taught in German.
Prerequisites & Notes: One 400-Level course or consent of instructor and two 300 level courses.
