ENGL 202 - Medieval British Literature

What did medieval English people read, watch, sing, and dream? In the two centuries before the printing press, English went from being the language of illiterate peasants to being the language of a flourishing and diverse literary tradition. We will survey festive community drama, lyric, Arthurian romance, story, and dream-vision, paying particular attention to the competing demands of entertainment and instruction, and to tensions between sacred and secular, popular and courtly.
