HIST 206 - Social Dissent, Power, and Heresy in Medieval EuropeFC SSCI 4 credits The existence of social and religious dissension in Medieval Europe challenged not only established doctrinal orthodoxy but also the political order. Different social groups, faiths and states reacted in diverse ways to these perceived threats and ultimately enforced drastic measures against those who rejected their authority. This course studies both dissent and its political, cultural, and intellectual backlash within the context of pre-modern European history. Discussions regarding the relationship between elites and social/religious minorities form the core of our studies as we seek to understand better the significance and the costs of cultural uniformity and religious enthusiasm.
