ENGL 210 - ShakespeareFC ARHU WINT 4 credits The Renaissance is remembered as an age of humanism, a time when man became the measure of all things. But the early modern imagination was also populated by a variety of inhuman or not-quite-human creatures, including monsters, ghosts, devils, fairies, and spirits of all kinds. We will survey the disputed boundaries of the human in a wide selection of Shakespeares poetry and plays. How does fiction shape our definitions of humanity? What can we learn from Renaissance inhumanism? British, Pre-1700. Prerequisites & Notes: For complete prerequisites, please refer to the English Program section titled ‘200-Level Courses.’
