HIST 211 - State, Empire and Rebellion in MENAFC SSCI CD 4 credits The Middle Eastern state is currently in crisis, after a series of mass uprisings leaving many regimes to instability or civil war. This course investigates the formation and transformations of colonial and post-colonial states in the Middle East, focusing on their encounters with world empires and subaltern revolts. Under influences of the Ottoman, French, British, and U.S. Empires, the Middle Eastern state took form and weathered periods of transition to modernity, socialism, authoritarianism, neo-liberalism, and rebellion.
