CRWR 240 - The Art of Creative Nonfiction

This course begins with the premise that the best creative nonfiction does two things at once: looks both inward and outward. Compelling creative nonfiction starts with questions that feel personally evocative and relevant, then moves beyond the self to explore the world with the narrative sensibility of the fiction writer and the journalist’s sensitivity toward observation. We’ll approach essay-writing as an art form, reading a variety of forms of creative nonfiction, including lyric essays, flash nonfiction, profiles, cultural criticism, and travel writing. Weekly exercises and larger assignments will give students opportunities to try techniques observed in these published essays.
