GERM 372 - What Is Pop?: German Fiction, Film and Music Since 1989

What is pop? What characterizes pop music, literature or film? Is the popular innocuous by definition, or can it be subversive? Guided by these questions, this course explores how German pop has addressed controversial topics such as social upheaval, immigration, sex and gender, and racism. Students will deepen their understanding of pop by investigating its forms and techniques, and ultimately examine how pop intervenes in pressing issues within our own societies and the world. Taught in English, no prerequisites.
