PHYS 910LE - Mechanics and Relativity (Lecture/Workshop)FC NSMA QFR 4 credits This course consists of the lecture and workshop part of PHYS 110. A study of Newtonian mechanics and special relativity, focusing on conceptual understanding, problem solving and laboratory work. Topics include point-particle dynamics, conservation principles, oscillation, systems of particles, rotation; time dilation, length contraction, and the relativity of simultaneity. This is the first course in a three-semester calculus-based introductory sequence. It is expected that all students taking this course will complete the laboratory part though PHYS 910LA in a subsequent semester. Prerequisites & Notes: MATH 133.
Notes: Concurrent or prior enrollment in MATH 134 is highly recommended as it is a prerequisite for PHYS 111.
The laboratory component is an integral part of learning process and must be taken in a subsequent semester through PHYS 910LA.
Students must complete PHYS 910LA to receive a final grade for PHYS 910LE. The transcript grade for PHYS 910LE will appear as an asterisk until completion of PHYS 910LA. Grades for lecture and lab will be combined for a final grade.
