HIST 121 - History of the Middle East and North Africa, from the Rise of Islam to 1800FC SSCI CD 4 credits This introductory course surveys the history of Islamic states, societies, and cultures from the formation of Islam to the beginnings of the Ottoman Empire. The course moves between primary texts and secondary readings to cover topics including: the life of Prophet Muhammad; Quran, Hadith, and Shari`a; religious and political sectarianism and rebellion; Sunni and Shi`i governments; Islamic philosophy, sciences, and literature; Muslim women; religious minorities; and encounters between Muslims and the West.
This course is appropriate for new students.
