ARBC 153H - Language and Society in the Arab World
HCARHUCD2 credits This course will examine the relationship between language and society in the Arab world. We will consider the roles of Modern Standard and dialectal Arabic, as well as debates surrounding their use and standardization. We will also explore the role of language use and the construction of identity (social, national, religious, etc.). Of particular interest will be the ways in which language intersects with politics, gender, religion, and nationalism as well as topics such as diglossia, codeswitching, and multilingualism in the Arab world.
